On strike!
My fifth grade teacher, Mr. White, was a perv. I'm not sure HOW perverted he was, because I was pretty naive at that age and rather unaware of my surroundings.

All I knew was that some of the girls in the class were having their 'training' bras snapped by good ol' Mr. White (I witnessed that several times) and some of the other girls said that he 'felt them up' (never saw that- or at least I wasn't aware of what he was doing). The only thing I remember him doing to me was rubbing my back for what seemed like extraordinary amounts of time while I worked at my desk.

Some of the girls went to the principal to complain about what Mr. White was doing, and they were told that he'd have to be caught in the act before they could do anything about it. Now come on.... is Mr. White so stupid that he'd be snapping bras in front of the principal? I don't know if any of the parents went to the principal because, again, I was in fifth grade and pretty much only cared about recess.

Anyway...

One day, some of the kids got together and made "on strike" signs. They wrote things like "on strike from school until Mr. White gets fired" or "Mr. White is a pervert"; and things like that. I decided that my participation would be the actual striking thing- but no sign holding. I liked the idea of being on strike because that got me out of going to class, but I knew somehow that holding a sign might get me in trouble.

The strike started at lunch and didn't last long. The principal reigned in all of the sign holders and gave them suspension and the rest of us had to go back to class to have our backs rubbed, bras snapped, and whatever else he might have been doing.

As far as I know, Mr. White continued teaching at that school until he retired. I know he was still teaching there ten years later. I'm sure things would be a lot different these days, in fact, probably almost too far to the other side of the spectrum. But I'd rather it be this way than the way it was back then- it was too easy for children to be molested by predators.

What brought up this topic, you might be wondering?

The bearded eye-roller and I were watching a TiVo'd South Park episode involving a school and a strike. I started to zone out (as I often do when BER is watching South Park), and good ol' Mr. White popped into my head.

I wonder what he's doing now....

Ew... That reminds me of our vice principal in middle school. I don't know of anything specific that he ever actually DID to anyone like popping bras or rubbing backs, but he always stood outside his office when classes would change and stare at the girls creepily. He called my best friend and I his Blue Eyes... which sounds sweet, unless you heard him say it. Isn't it interesting how much kids can pick up on without even really realizing all of the ramifications?

Sounds like the science teacher I had and the history teacher my girls had...only the history teacher was liking the boys. Needless to say, he went "on leave" and then "retired" after ticking off the wrong set of parents! It was an ongoing battle for a couple of decades. The school board moved him from one school to another, then one grade to another and finally it all caught up with him. Good riddance!

That's so weird that you brought this topic up. When my sister was in primary school, there was a teacher there who some of the girls were complaining about. Of course we're going back to the mid 90's but still. He was the girls gym teacher.

Apparently some of the girls were saying that he would rub his hands up and down their legs when they did handstands or headstands. Another of the girls claimed he touched her "down there."

I found it all a little too ludicrous to be true, but of course, the school investigated. I remember getting home one evening to mom telling me that I couldn't go watch tv because "There's a lady talking to your sister in there." This lady was trying to figure out of this teacher had ever touched her inappropriately (Which he hadn't) and then she left.

The last time I read about that teacher, he was serving 10 years in prison for molesting kids, and had been put on the sex offenders register. I don't know where he is now, but wherever he is, I hope he feels ashamed!

The World War 2 generation (our parents) will never really understand why the Baby Boomers are so strict with our kids, after we enjoyed such freedom as youngsters. What we don't tell them is how we were assaulted, arrested, molested, infested, and enticed by drugs, and kept our mouths shut about it. We don't want that for our kids.
