I’m a movie star!
I've decided that I need to start looking for the door leading out of the sound stage, just like Jim Carrey's character in the Truman Show. I've been receiving anywhere from 3-7 calls a day from a 555 phone number from an area code in North Dakota for about a month now. I've never actually talked to the person on the other end of the phone because if I don't answer, they don't leave a message. If I do answer, they hang up.Last week, I received one of the calls while BJ and I were at a stop light, so I showed him the number. I did the V-8 smack on my forehead after he quickly noted that "555" numbers are not real numbers. That prefix is only used on TV and in movies. Now if my life was more interesting and my co-star was George Clooney, I'd be willing to accept that I was living in a movie. And a darned fine movie at that, if George Clooney was my co-star. Sigh and swoon. Oh- oops. Back to the post. I got a little distracted for a minute. Out of curiosity, I decided to do a call back on the number after the last hang up this morning. Here's how it went: Directory assistance recording: What city and listing please? Me: Ummmmm...... Real directory assistance person (DA): What city and listing are you looking for? Me: I'm not. I have been getting calls from this phone number several times a day, so I thought I'd call it back to see where it went. I got you. DA: I don't understand Me: I've been receiving phone calls from 701-555-2xxx (the numbers range from 2000 to 2025) DA: I don't see a listing for that number Me: (sigh) Yes, I know. It's a 555 number, it's not real. I just think it's interesting that when I hit return call, I got you. DA: Yes, that's strange. Is there anything else I can do for you? Me: No thank you. Sigh.... Click. Next, I emailed my cellphone carrier with the issue to see if I can either block the number or find out what is going on. In my email I mentioned that I didn't think 555 was a legitimate number. His answer? Ready? Pay attention, because this is PRICELESS! Further, it is not possible to tell whether phone number starting with prefix 555 belongs to Legitimate. He thinks "legitimate" is a name! Apparently the movie I'm starring in is a comedy. It's a computer. If you answer, it knows you're a good number and adds you to the solicitation list. Isn't technology great?    ![]() FTS wrote:
In order to make sense of the responses, you must sink to their level. Please don't, though. Try going to your store and getting one of the whiz kids to figure it out for you. They love that stuff. Oh -- and "The Truman Show" was outstanding, one of the few Jim Carrey movies I actually liked. ---

I think my dad is the only person in the world with a real 555 number. He's had the same number for YEARS and it still feels odd to hit '555'. As for the dork you emailed....maybe he wasn't real either...? :-O    ![]() tj wrote:
I always thought ALL 555 numbers were fictional, that's my HW uses them, strange: Good luck sorting that nightmare out, eek.    ![]() peter wrote:
I've been receiving the same calls...only from 555-20xx. Ever figure it out yet? I'm very confused...    ![]() NorCal MTBKR wrote:

Hey, I have been "plagged" by the same numbers 701-555-xxxx. I finally found a website that told me 701-555 is registered through QWEST and regulated through Minnesota public commission. I recommend everyone file a complaint through this site: http://www.puc.state.mn.us/consumer/complain.htm. The more complaints they get the sooner they will do something about this. From my perspective this is identity theft.    ![]() quin wrote:
hmm. Here in the UK we have things were 10 computers dial 5 people only expecting 5 people to pick up. The sixth person who picks up gets a 'silent call'. Don't you have a Do-Not-Call list in the US now? You should go onto that. Next entry: Still struggling Previous entry: The closing blessing In case you're wondering....
